Akinci named to NASEM BICE

Professor Burcu Akinci was recently named to the NASEM Board on Infrastructure and the Constructed Environment (BICE). This group advises government legislators and private sector organizations about the design, construction, security, impacts, maintenance, and evaluation of buildings and infrastructure systems.

Akinci is the Paul Christiano Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Associate Dean for Research for the College of Engineering, Director of the Engineering Research Accelerator, and co-director of the Pennsylvania Smarter Infrastructure Incubator at Carnegie Mellon University.

Her research interests include the development of approaches to model and reason about information-rich histories of facilities to streamline construction and facility management processes. She specifically focuses on investigating the utilization and integration of building information models with data capture and tracking technologies, such as 3D imaging, embedded sensors, and radio-frequency identification systems, to capture semantically-rich as-built histories of construction projects and facility operations.

The BICE group was established in 1946 as the Building Research Advisory Board, BICE and its predecessor organizations have been the principal units of the National Research Council concerned with the built environment. This group brings together in an independent forum expertise from a wide range of scientific, engineering, and social science disciplines to address problems and issues.
