CEE PhD student Kevin Freymiller, who earned his Physics undergraduate degree from Reed College, has been honored with the Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Under the mentorship of Professor Sean Qian, Freymiller's doctoral research currently centers on a complex analysis of the intricate relationship between energy and transportation systems, specifically during the morning commute when electric vehicles (EVs) come into play. Employing sophisticated mathematical models, the primary goal is to rigorously deduce strategic policy recommendations that can effectively mitigate the shared financial burdens of both systems, particularly in the context of EV charging pricing strategies.
In addition, his investigation delves into the nuanced impact of solar energy. This involves examining how the presence of solar energy, especially during the morning hours as EV drivers head to work, influences the demand for non-renewable energy sources, and how this, in turn, affects charging behaviors based on pricing incentives.
“I'm very honored and excited to receive this fellowship,” says Freymiller. “I would like to thank my advisor Professor Qian for his support and guidance in working on this project.”
The Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program aims to attract the brightest talents to the transportation field and promote workforce development in transportation-related disciplines, encompassing all modes of transportation. Over the years, this program has contributed over $50 million to support exceptional minds in the transportation industry, leading to transformative innovations in various transportation sectors and producing leaders in academia, private industry, and public service.
