While classwork and traditional courses offer important foundational knowledge, applying your studies through research gives students the chance to explore real-life applications and potential career paths in civil and environmental engineering. Whether completed with faculty, through the Honors Research program, or independently, research experience is invaluable to your education and future job prospects.
SURG grants
The Small Undergraduate Research Grant (SURG) program offers funding to students for eight to ten weeks of full-time summer research in any field they choose. SURG is a flexible opportunity that allows you to work individually or in a group and explore any field of study in a setting of your choice.
Independent study
Undergraduate students have the opportunity to join faculty and graduate students in hands-on research projects to sharpen their technical skills in a collaborative environment. Explore CEE faculty research interests and contact a faculty member to learn more.
Honors research
Juniors with an accumulated QPA of at least 3.5 will receive an invitation to participate in the College of Engineering Honors Research Program. A minimum of 18 units are completed over the course of your senior year and are required to receive the College of Engineering Honors at commencement.
Summer research internships
CEE also offers a limited number of summer research opportunities. These competitive 8-week internships allow students to work with CEE faculty on active research projects and conclude with a poster presentation. Information to apply is emailed to all students during the spring semester.
