American Society of Civil Engineers
The vision of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), America’s oldest national engineering society, is “to position engineers as global leaders building a better quality of life.” The Carnegie Mellon chapter of ASCE fulfills this mission by providing social, educational, and professional development opportunities to Civil Engineering majors. ASCE encourages members to grow to become civil engineers who can advance the profession. Members are recognized for their dedication to ASCE’s three strategic priorities—infrastructure, raising the bar, and sustainability. Open to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Chi Epsilon
Chi Epsilon (ChiEp) is an honors society that fosters the development and exercise of sound traits of character and technical ability among Civil Engineers by precept and example, working toward an even higher standard of professional service. Chi Epsilon helps students to develop key characteristics that will allow them to pursue a successful engineering career, and give back to the civil engineering profession. The Carnegie Mellon chapter is one of 130 active chapters and recognizes its members for their achievements in scholarship, character, practicality, and sociability. Open to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Engineers Without Borders
Engineers Without Borders (EWB) helps create a more stable and prosperous world by addressing people’s basic human needs by providing necessities such as clean water, power, sanitation, and education. EWB-USA’s strength comes from its over 250 dedicated chapters, including university chapters on 180 campuses in the United States. It is open to both undergraduate and graduate students.
National Society of Black Engineers
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively affect the community. The Carnegie Mellon chapter of NSBE participates in activities such as tutorial programs, group study sessions, high school/junior high outreach programs, technical seminars, and workshops in addition to taking advantage of all the resources and opportunities afforded by the national organization. Open to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers
The CMU chapter of the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE) aims to prepare and strengthen Asian Pacific American scientists and engineers for their future careers by providing them with professional development and networking opportunities with fellow students and professionals from various careers and backgrounds. The chapter is open to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Society of Hispanic Engineers
The Carnegie Mellon chapter of the Society of Hispanic Engineers (SHPE) strives to increase the number of Hispanic engineering and science students at Carnegie Mellon through the development of programs with industry and the university. These activities are designed to increase career awareness, encourage relationships with professionals, develop leadership skills, and promote academic excellence. The chapter is open to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Society of Women Engineers
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a highly active organization that offers its members scholarship, career, service, and social opportunities. Some highlights of SWE’s programming include its annual Winter Ball, participation in National Engineers Week, the SWE National Convention, and carnival booth building. The organization is open to both undergraduate and graduate students.
