Undergraduate application

Undergraduate students can declare a major in the second semester of their first year. If you would like Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering to be your primary major, you must declare no later than halfway through your final semester of sophomore year. Students interested in continuing their education in CEE may choose to enroll in our Integrated BS/MS program.

CEE offers a variety of courses for students to choose from. In general, undergraduates will complete:

  • Two years of foundational math and science courses
  • Two years of engineering coursework
  • Four hands-on project courses are held every fall semester

The Mixed Use Valley Paths team, comprised of CEE students Ava Badie, Andrea Dominguez, Julane Johnson, Justin Peng, and Abby Stech, collaborated with other student groups to revamp mobility along Washington Boulevard. The team earned the Best Design award at the College of Engineering's TechSpark Engineering Exposition.

Our CEE faculty are united in the goal of developing socially conscious engineers who understand how their decisions impact communities and individuals. Across the curriculum, courses examine issues like inequitable pollution, resource access, climate impacts, and community displacements through historical and current lenses, while also emphasizing the skills needed to identify potential problems, address existing injustices, and design more equitable infrastructure in the future.

Across the four CEE project courses, students gain hands-on experience solving complex problems while facing uncertainty, risk, and constraints that mirror the challenges they’ll face as professional engineers. Along the way, they become increasingly skilled at applying the knowledge and tools essential to the field—including the ability to use sensing and computing to design, construct, operate, and maintain individual and interdependent infrastructure systems.

CEE capstone: Aquaponics for Center of Life

Center of Life hopes to use these student-built prototypes to create a facility to host educational events for schools and community members as well as produce food they could sell at a farmer’s market for revenue.
